On October 26, 2024, the “Forum on Translation Studies in the New Era” and the 3rd “Hujiang Cup” Science and Technology Translation Competition Awards were held at USST. The event was co-hosted by USST, the Shanghai Science and Technology Translation Society (SSTTS) , and the Technical Universities Committee of the China University Alliance for the Development of Foreign Language and Literature Discipline (CUAFLL), co-hosted by CFL, Worldnese (a translation company), Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press (SFLEP), Tmxmall, editorial boards of the Shanghai Journal of Translators and the Journal of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (Social Science Edition).
Presided over by Liu Qin, Dean of CFL, the opening ceremony commenced with a welcome address by Cai Yonglian, Vice President of USST. She emphasized that building a modernized China with Chinese characteristics in all respects requires support from education, technology, and talents. She also highlighted the urgency for universities to deepen educational reforms, accelerate the development of world-class disciplines, and foster interdisciplinary research. She urged CFL to strengthen the integration of technology and humanities in translation education, innovate talent cultivation models, and address societal demands for skilled translators in the AI era.

Dean Liu Presided over the Forum
The forum featured keynote speeches from leading experts in translation studies. Professor Dang Zhengsheng ( from Xi’an International Studies University, XISU) delivered a speech on the topic of “Cultivating Cross-Cultural Competence and Global Vision for High-Quality Translators in the New Era”. He stressed the need to prioritize intercultural communication skills in graduate translation programs to enhance translators’ scientific and humanistic literacy.
Chen Shengquan (Founding Director of Huawei Translation Center) presented a speech on the topic of “The Expanding Scope of Technical Translation”, detailing Huawei’s three generations of machine translation practices. He emphasized the irreplaceable role of translators in optimizing technical documentation for global audiences and building multilingual competitiveness.
Professor Wang Yong (Director of USST’s MTI Education Center) explored “Pathways for Cultivating Sci-Tech Translators in the AI Era”, advocating embracing AI tools to develop well-rounded professionals.
Professor Huang Youyi (Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, TAC) gave a keynote speech on “Strengthening National Translation Capacity Through Talent Development”, using case studies to underscore the importance of practical translation skills in global communication.
The speeches were moderated by deans from USST, Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance (SLU), Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU), and Shanghai University (SHU).

Then came the 3rd “Hujiang Cup” Science and Technology Translation Competition Awards. The contest attracted 2,261 participants from 285 universities and enterprises, competing in English, Japanese, German target texts. After three rounds of anonymous evaluations by 34 experts, 379 winners were selected. Among them, 10 winners of First Prizes, 20 of Second Prizes, 65 of Third Prizes and 284 of Excellent Award.
Notably, one of the awardees was Zhang Manxuan, a MTI student from USST, who won First Prize. The awards were presented by Professor Yang Junfeng (Former Vice President of Dalian University of Foreign Languages, DUFL), Professor Zhang Xi (Dean of College of Foreign Languages, Donghua University, DHU), and other distinguished guests.

On behalf of the organizing Committee, Professor Yang Junfeng delivered a speech. He praised the event for advancing sci-tech translation education and fostering international collaboration.
