On September 27, 2024, the “2nd Shanghai College Students’ International Communication Contest on Chinese Culture” culminated at the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU). The competition was supervised by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission (SMEC) and Shanghai International Studies Association (SISA), sponsored by (SISU), co-sponsored by the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press (SFLEP), and hosted by SISU’s School of English Studies. Notably, participants from CFL secured one First Prize and one Excellency Award.

This contest aims to strengthen the inheritance of fine traditional Chinese culture, to uphold the spirit of the Chinese nation, to enhance understanding of contemporary China, and to improve English language Proficiency and international communication skills of university students in Shanghai. To gear up to the competition, our faculty members, Shen Xietian and Ji Xiaowen, provided multi-round targeted guidance to the competitors. Besides, Professor Liu Qin, Dean of CFL, served as an adjudicator.

On the morning of 27 September, twelve contestants from prestigious universities in Shanghai were required to perform bilingual consecutive interpretation on topics covering Chinese literature, history, geography, foreign affairs, current events, and the Theory on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. In the afternoon, contests have to finish three assignments, that is, cultural knowledge Q&A, English impromptu speech, and dialogue interpreting. Three assignments focus on Shanghai-style culture, revolutionary history and cultures popular in south of the Yangtze River. These themes highlighted Shanghai’s urban ethos of “inclusiveness, pursuit of excellence, wisdom, and magnanimity” and its metropolitan character of “openness, innovation, and inclusiveness”. As participants of CFL, Sun Jiaming, the class of 2022 (Sino-US Joint Program), won the First Prize and Shi Lijia, of 2023 (Translation for Science and Technology), received the Excellent Award
