German Department Students WonAwarded National Third Prize at National University Undergraduate German Dubbing Contest
On May 31, the final of the 8th National University Undergraduate German Dubbing Contest was held at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU). After rounds of rigorous competitionselection, the students team from the German Department of USSTthe University of Shanghai for Science and Technology stood out among contestants from 34 universities nationwideacross the country and qualified for the national final. A total ofAs one of the 12 finalist teams nationwide competed in the final nationwide, the team competed on the final stage. This year’s contest adopted “Science Fiction” as its theme, encouraging young students to reflect on the relationship between technological development and humanistic values through language learning and artistic expression. During the preliminary round, the team from USST’s German Department selected a classic clip from the animated film Big Hero 6 for dubbing. To achieve the best performance, team members devoted their spare time to repeated practice. They carefully polished pronunciation details, emotional delivery, and character portrayal to continuously improve the quality of their entry. Thanks to their solid professional competence and seamless teamwork, the team successfully advanced to the national final.
The final adopted a competition format featuring on the spot random selection of clips and time limited preparation, which set higher requirements for contestants’ German proficiency, ability to think on their feet, and teamwork skills. The team made advance preparations onaround film themes in advance, delved into background stories of the footage, analysed character traits, and conducted simulated training for diverse scenarios to meet rise to the challenges of the final. On that day, team members quickly got into actiongear when confronted with the challenge of unknown clips. They finished role allocation and content preparation within the limited time limit. Completing the contest with natural, fluent language delivery and poised on site performance, they demonstrated sound professional competence and fine team spirit.
German major students from twelve universities across China gathered in Beijing to compete side by side, exchange ideas and learn from one another during the contest. Members of the USST team not only broadened their professional horizons but also deepened their understanding of the German language, culture and film art by observing the impressive performances of other participating teams. Wu Jiang, Party Secretary of the Party General Branch of the School of German at Beijing Foreign Studies University, delivered remarks centering on this year’s “Science Fiction” theme at the post event summary session. She pointed out that against the backdrop of rapid technological advancement, while people paying attention to technological progress, they should uphold the humanistic spirit. Beyond knowledge accumulation and competence improvement, one should make efforts continuous efforts should be made to cultivate personal integrity. Her inspiring remarks triggered in depth reflections among teachers and students present on the relationship between technology and humanities.
