On the afternoon of October 27, 2020, Zhu Weimin, member of the Standing Committee of the Shanghai CPPCC, executive deputy director of Committee for Friendship with Foreign Countries of the Shanghai CPPCC, vice president of the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association and Council member of the Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy, was invited to give an academic lecture at USST. Participants in the lecture are Cai Yonglian, vice president of USST, senior administrators and academic leaders from Business School and College of Foreign Languages, and over 200 faculty members and students. The lecture was presided over by Liu Qin, dean of College of Foreign Languages and executive dean of the Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy.
With the title of Sino-US Relations and Public Diplomacy, Zhu analyzed the complexity and severity of Sino-US relations, and demonstrated the importance of public diplomacy and its existing problems and countermeasures. Zhu called on teachers and students to have a correct understanding of Chinas comprehensive strength and international status, to be confident and aware of the existing problems and shortcomings, to take corresponding countermeasures in line with the rapidly changing situation, to improve public diplomacy ability and to strengthen communication with other countries. In a bid to share Chinese stories, further integration into the international community is needed. His instructive and informative lecture was well-grounded, and delivered with a sense of humor, which left a deep impression on the faculty members and students present. All the participants agreed that they had learned a lot.
In her concluding speech, Liu Qin praised that Zhus lecture had drawn lessons from history and served as a curtain-raiser to the university’s research on public diplomacy, hoping that teachers and students would pay more attention to and participate in public diplomacy activities.
On September 7, 2020, USST and the Shanghai Public Diplomacy Association jointly established the Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy. Zhu Weimins lecture is the first expert guidance lecture since the establishment of Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy, which guides teachers and students to engage themselves in public diplomacy activities. On the same day, Zhu Weimin visited the College of Foreign Languages and held talks with Cai Yonglian, Zhang Hua and other senior administrators to sketch the future of the Institute.
