On the morning of June 7th, USST and the Queens College of the City University of New York, USA held the annual meeting of the Sino-US Joint School-Running Program Management Committee (the “Management Committee” for short) for undergraduate education of English majors, the Sino-US Cooperative School-running Program of the College of Foreign Languages, in the USST’s Video Conference Room. Due to the pandemic, the Management Committee held the meeting online. Zhang Hua, Vice President of USST and director of the Management Committee; Elizabeth Hendrey, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of Queens College of the City University of New York and vice director of the Management Committee; William McClure, Dean for the Division of Arts and Humanities; Tao Wang, Associate Dean of the College of Economics and director of the program of the US side; Ma Xiaoting, director of the International Affairs Office(IAO) of USST; Liu Qin, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages and director of the program of the Chinese side; Yu Yiqi, the previous chair of the Program for English Majors (Sino-US Cooperation) and one of the people in charge of the former program; and Huang Fang, the current chair and person in charge of the program and some other relevant people from the International Affairs Office attended the meeting.
Vice President Zhang Hua gave full affirmation to the significance of the program in his speech, pointing out that the Sino-US Cooperative Program between the two sides has a history of over twenty-five years, and with two sides’ close cooperation relationship, has cultivated almost two thousand talents for society, and is the pioneer of the Sino-foreign Cooperation in school running. The great achievements couldn’t have been made without the hard work the relevant leaders, teachers and students of the two universities. Over the past two years, the two universities have pulled together and cooperated whole heartedly, withstanding the huge test of the coronavirus all over the world and making the cooperation not interrupted for one single day, which enables students to continue to study and senior students to graduate smoothly. He stressed that the two universities should actively open up new teaching models against the background of current internationalized education strategies, to add vitality to the joint program of the two universities.
Elizabeth Hendrey, provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of Queens College of the City, praised the program of the two universities highly, emphasizing that the program with USST is the longest cooperative one they have had so far, and that Queens College attaches great importance to the cooperation partnership with USST. She also indicated that the US side hopes to further create new cooperative areas with USST, based on the rich achievements made by the two universities’ Sino-US school-running program and the program of jointly cultivating bachelors with double degrees.
At the meeting, William McClure, Dean for the Division of Arts and Humanities of Queens College, expressed his sincere concern and best wishes for the program. Ma Xiaoting, director of the IAO of USST, gave some advice on how to guide students to carry out innovation and entrepreneurship projects. Yu Yiqi, the previous chair of the Program for English Majors (Sino-US Cooperation) and one of the people in charge of the former program, summed up her own work experience of many years of the program and extended her wishes that the program would be run better and better. Huang Fang, the current chair and person in charge of the program, expressed her resolution to devote all her efforts to the program, and hoped that the program will go on better and better. At the meeting, Liu Qin, director of the program of the USST side, delivered an annual school running report whereas Tao Wang, Associate Dean of the College of Economics and director of the program of the US side, delivered an annual report on the situation of the dispatch of teachers by the US side.
The attendees discussed member change of the Joint Management Committee and the supplementary provisions about how to allow students to re-choose their majors before relevant agreements were signed. After the meeting, both parties expressed that they will keep working hard, cooperate actively and exert all their strength to push forward the smooth launch of the Sino-US school-running program, and expect to meet face to face to further discuss the program in detail after the pandemic.
