On June 27th , 2021, the 13th Congress of the Representatives of the Members of Shanghai International Studies Association and its Academic Seminar were held in the Academic Lecture Hall of Shanghai Social Science Hall. Prof. Liu Qin, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages, USST, attended the Congress, together with Prof. Han Geling, Deputy Dean of the College, Prof. Ni Jincheng, director of the Institute of Linguistics, Associate Professor Zhang Le, director of the College English Teaching and Researching Centre, Associate Professor Huang Fang, chair of the Department of English (Sino-US Cooperation) and Associate Professor Liu Man, chair of the Department of Japanese.
At the beginning, Professor Ye Xingguo, the twelfth president, delivered a work report. Professor Peng Qinglong, leader of the Party Working Group, vice president, and Secretary General of the association, explained the association’s charter’s revision and the candidates for the 13th Board of Directors. Professor Wen Jianping, supervisor of the association, delivered a supervisor’s work report. After the Congress deliberated, discussed and approved the above-mentioned reports, the directors and the leading group of the 13th Board of Directors were elected. Professor Liu Qin, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages was elected as Vice President and executive director. Professor Han Geling, deputy dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Professor Ni Jincheng, director of the Institute of Linguistics, were both elected as directors.
Later, the newly elected president of the 13th Board of Directors Professor Zha Mingjian, Vice President of Shanghai International Studies University, made a speech. Then, Ren Xiaowen, member of the Party’s Leadership Group and duty president of Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, delivered a speech. At the academic seminar, Researcher Jiang Feng, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Shanghai International Studies University and chairman of the Teaching Steering Committee of Foreign Languages and Literature for the Institutions of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, and Professor Sun Youzhong, vice president of Beijing Foreign Studies University gave an academic report on “New Challenges and New Opportunities for Foreign Language Education” and “ Several Thoughts about the Construction of First-class Majors and First-class Courses” respectively. The representatives from the College of Foreign Languages who attended the congress listened carefully to their reports and held discussions in connection with the relevant work of the college.
Founded in February, 2021, Shanghai International Studies Association, one of the earliest eight basic institutes established in Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, aims to strengthen the contact with foreign language workers in the city, organize members to carry out the research and practice in the areas of foreign languages and literature, foreign language teaching, translation, international economics, international trade, international finance, and the like, promote academic and cultural exchanges between foreign language workers and researchers in this the city and foreign language workers and researchers in other provinces and cities (or overseas), improve the level of foreign language research and application in the city, serve the economic construction of the city and our country, and serve the reform and opening up. Professor Lu Siyuan, the late dean of the College of Foreign Languages, served as president of the association for many years, and dozens of teachers from our college have participated in the relevant work and academic communication activities of the association as directors or members.
At the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and the 115th anniversary of the founding of our university, Dean Liu Qin was elected as vice president, marking the beginning of a new journey in the construction of the foreign language discipline of our university. We will further strengthen the exchanges and cooperation with other universities and jointly contribute advice and suggestions on the development of the mission of foreign languages in Shanghai and the whole country.
