The semi-final and final of the 12th “SELEP Cup” National Foreign Language Teaching Contest (Professional Group) in Shanghai were held in Shanghai University from June 5th to 6th, 2021. Twenty-two contestants from eighteen universities, including Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai International Studies University, East China University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University, Shanghai Normal University and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, participated in the competition of two groups, namely English Professional Group and Business English Professional Group. On the first day, these contestants presented their 20-minute “classroom lectures” , 10 of whom then were qualified for the final on the second day, which consisted of a 30-minute preparation followed by a 10-minute “impromptu lecture” and a 5-minute “Q&A”.
Jia Xiaoqing, Deputy Director of the Department of English (Sci-tech Translation) and Huang Fang, Director of the Department of English (Sino-US Cooperation), participated in all the three rounds of competition in the two days. The two teachers won high praise from the judges with their solid language skills, profound humanistic knowledge, rich teaching experience and unique analyses. Particularly, the part of integrating curriculum thinking and foreign language teaching fully demonstrated their skills to combine values shaping, knowledge transfer and ability cultivation. All of these aspects helped them win the first prize respectively in the English major group and the business English major group in the Shanghai final, not only winning honor for our university, but also demonstrating our teachers’ advanced professionalism, fluent language ability, strong thinking ability and profound understanding of curriculum thinking. The College of Foreign Languages, relying on its adequate preparations and excellent performance of its contestants, won the only Excellent Organization Award of the competition. Professor Liu Qin, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages of USST, and member of the National College Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee in Institutions of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, served as head of the competition judges and gave a meaningful, humorous, profound and insightful comment on behalf of the group of judges at the awarding ceremony, delivering and far-reaching meanings.

The competition received great support from the leadership of the College of Foreign Languages and the pre-tournament guidance from teachers, namely Gu Dinglan, Chen Yu, Chen Zheng, Ji Xiaowen and Liu Qiufen. And Ji Xiaowen and Zhang Haoruo these two teachers even took the trouble to the site to cheer for two contestants. The whole process from the preparation to the competition showed the excellent teamwork spirit of the College of Foreign Languages.

The “SELEP Cup” National Foreign Language Teaching Contest is jointly sponsored by the National Advisory Committee on Teaching Foreign Language and Literature to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education , the National Advisory Committee on Teaching College Foreign Language to Majors in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education, the Advisory Committee of Foreign Language Teaching in Vocational Education under the Ministry of Education, the Shanghai International Studies Association and the Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. Held for twelve years, it represents the highest level of foreign language teaching in China’s colleges and universities, having received wide attention and praise, actively promoting the development of foreign language teaching reform in China and stimulating the teaching enthusiasm of teachers. Every year, our university holds an internal selection competition from which outstanding teachers will be selected to participate in the semi-final and the final in Shanghai, so as to exchange with other institutions. The fact that both our teachers and unit won high-level awards proves the great success of the English teaching reform in the College of Foreign Languages, which not only tests the achievements of our foreign language teaching reform, but also actively promotes the construction of new arts in the College of Foreign Languages, further implements the fundamental task of establishing moral education, and dedicates to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CPC and the 115th anniversary of the founding of the USST.
