On the evening of May 20th, the second Shakespeare Festival Presentation and Award Ceremony of the Department of English (Sino-US Cooperation) was held in the Music Hall of the university. The festival is an important second classroom activity organized by the Department to better cultivate students’ intercultural communicative skills, humanities and arts perception, as well as aesthetic and virtuous practice based on the results of the reflections of English Literature course. Qu Deqiang, Party Secretary of the College, Liu Qin, Dean of the College, Han Ge Ling, Deputy Dean of the College, and Jin Xiaodong, Deputy Party Secretary of the College, attended the event. In addition, Yin Yurong, Deputy Party Secretary of the Department of Directing of Shanghai Theatre Academy, Wang Li, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Business and Management of Shanghai International Studies University, Zhang Wei, an expert in Shakespearean studies at the College of Liberal Arts of Shanghai University, Liang Miao, Secretary of the Youth League Committee of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University, Yang Yang, Deputy Secretary of the Youth League Committee of USST, Gao Han, a clerk of the Youth League Committee of USST and other guests in USST and beyond watched the performance.
Dean Liu Qin made a speech before the performance. She pointed out that this year’s serial activities like Shakespeare Festival echoes the university’s major initiative of “Shanghai Institute of Public Diplomacy” and raises the cultivation of students’ intercultural communicative skills to a new level, providing an excellent example of strong operability and high interest for mutual learning and appreciation between East and West civilizations. After Ms. Liu’s speech, the curtain went up on the closing play of the festival, “As You Like It”. On the stage, the actors gave their best effort to accurately and smoothly deliver every delicate line of the original English text, completed the characterization with meticulous physical movements, and presented the plot development dramatically. Their good performance gained unanimous applause from the audience, not only showing the best recognition the efforts of the guiding team and the student cast and crew for several months, but also paying a heartfelt tribute to the lofty humanistic ideals involved in Shakespeare’s plays.
When the performance was over, on behalf of the department, Ms. Huang Fang, chair of the Department of English (Sino-US Cooperation), expressed her gratitude to the leaders and guests for their support, spoke highly of the teachers and students who participated in the performance of Shakespeare Festival, and set an expectation for the next Shakespeare Festival to repeat its glory. Party Secretary Qu Deqiang, Dean Liu Qin and the guests presented the award certificates to the winning actors and actresses and drew the lucky prizes for the audience. The second Shakespeare Festival Presentation and Award Ceremony of Department of English (Sino-American cooperation) of the College of Foreign Languages concluded successfully.
