Recently, the undergraduate English major of College of Foreign Languages (including Translation for Science and Technology and Sino-US Joint Program) has won QS Stars’ highest Five Stars rating, boasting itself of the first undergraduate major in USST to obtain a QS Stars’Five Stars certification, and also making USST the first university in China to obtain a QS Stars Five Stars undergraduate major certification.
QS, US News and THE are known as the world’s top three ranking systems, which entitled QS one of the authoritative rankings recognized by the Chinese educationalcircles. "QS Stars rating" is an evaluation system developed according to the university or major indicators that students are most concerned about. Through the objective and detailed evaluation of the strength of universities or majors, it provides useful reference for students to choose target universities and majors. In China, QS Stars has issued certification to City University of Hong Kong, School of Management of Zhejiang University, School of Management of University of Science and Technology of China, School of Management of Xi'an Jiaotong University, etc. The English major of CFL is the first undergraduate major to obtain QS Stars’Five Stars certification in China.
CFL launched the QS Stars rating application for English majors in 2021. Professor Liu Qin, head of the English professional team and dean of CFL, led the establishment of a special QS rating task force to coordinate data collection and sorting of the English Department and various sections of CFL. In April 2022, the English major officially accepted the remote evaluation of QS, and strictly assessed the scores according to the seven categories of "graduation rate", "employment rate", "student satisfaction", "teacher-student ratio", "admission rate", "internationalization" and "domestic and foreign certification". In the end, the English major received full marks in four categories: "graduation rate", "employment rate", "student satisfaction" and "teacher-student ratio", winning the highest Five Stars rating within the discipline of "English Language & Literature".
At present, the College’s English major is the first-class undergraduate major construction site in Shanghai, employing a "one body, two wings"training mode which combines English with science & technology and business, in an attemp to cultivate compound talents with solid English competence, strong science & technology translation and interpretation skill as well as ability in international business application. Over the years, the teaching team has deepened the comprehensive reform of talent training, given full play to its professional advantages, and constantly strengthened the quality of professional teaching and graduate training. The successful award of QS Stars’Five Stars certification marks a solid step in the process of internationalization, which plays an important role in clarifying the goals of talent training, promoting international exchanges and cooperation, and improving the quality of professional education.
