Recently, the General Office of the Ministry of Education has announced the list of national and provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites in 2021. The English major of CFL (including 'Translation for Science and Technology' and 'Sino-US Joint Program') has been selected as the national first-class undergraduate major construction site, and the German major has been selected as the first-class undergraduate major construction site in Shanghai. This is another major breakthrough made by CFL in the 'Double Ten Thousand Plan' after the English major was selected as the first-class undergraduate major in Shanghai in 2020.
The English major comes from the 'Science & Technology English' founded in 1979. Adhering to the foreign language education thought laid by CFL’s founding professors Lu Siyuan and Dai Weihua, it is one of the earliest English majors in Chinese universities. In 2018, the college formed two characteristic directions of science & technology translation and international business, and implemented the 'one body, two wings'training mode, with English as the one body, science & technology and business as the two wings. At present, CFL boasts one first-class undergraduate course in Shanghai, one excellent course and 6 key undergraduate courses in Shanghai. In 2022, it received the highest level of QS Stars rating and certification, becoming the first undergraduate major to obtain QS Stars’Five Stars certification in China.
The German major derives from 'Science & Technology German' major founded in 1979, which is one of the earliest science & technology German majors in China. The major is positioned as building a first-class science & technology German major with distinctive characteristics, and adheres to cultivating socialist builders and successors with national feelings and international vision, solid German application ability, science & technology, economy & trade and cross-cultural exchange ability, and all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetic and labor. At present, it boasts one first-class undergraduate course in Shanghai, one excellent course in Shanghai and 3 key undergraduate courses in Shanghai, forming a course system with remarkable science & technology characteristics.
In recent years, the English major and the German major have adhered to moral education, deepened professional reform, vigorously promoted the construction of curriculum connotation, attached great importance to practical teaching and innovative education, strengthened faculty construction, intensified the construction of professional teaching quality assurance system, and improved the quality of graduate training. All these efforts have yielded remarkable results.
