From April 14 to 16, 2023, the National College of Foreign Languages Deans/Department Chairs Forum, sponsored by the English Major Teaching Guidance Committee (EMTGC) of the Foreign Language and Literature Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education and hosted by Hunan Normal University, was successfully held in Changsha. Experts from EMTGC and more than 400 deans and department heads from many universities gathered in Changsha. Liu Qin, Dean of CFL, USST was invited by the conference to give a keynote speech at the sub-forum. Jiang Cheng, Head of the English Department (Science and Technology Translation) and Huang Fang, Head of the English Department (Sino-US Cooperation) of CFLalso attended the meeting.
The Forum focused on the development of first-class foreign language disciplines, the cultivation of outstanding English talents, the construction of Chinese discourse system, the construction of international communication capacity, and the ideological and political education of English majors. On the afternoon of April 14, the organizer of the School of Foreign Languages of Hunan Normal University held an Open Day activity. The participants of our College visited the smart classroom, virtual simulation laboratory and other teaching places, and watched the activities of famous teachers' open class, 'First-class disciplines help revitalize rural education', and learned about the teaching concept and discipline construction measures of the School of Foreign Languages of Hunan Normal University.
The six keynote reports on April 15 focused on the development of first-class foreign language disciplines under the background of the new era, the construction and external communication of China's discourse system, and the ideological and political construction of English major courses, and guided the macro layout of the development of English majors in the new era with a high historical position, a broad international perspective and a deep strategic vision. In the session of the special forum, Dean Liu Qin made a keynote report entitled 'Training of English Composite Talents in Science and Technology Universities from the Perspective of New Liberal Arts', introduced the history of the development of English majors in CFL, USST, the innovative measures for the training of composite talents and the teaching reform of the national strategy, etc., and held dialogues with many deans and department heads of foreign languages schools in universities. The characteristics and effective ways of talent cultivation for English majors in science and technology universities under the background of the new era were deeply discussed.
Since being approved as the national first-class undergraduate major construction point in 2021, the English major of CFL has made in-depth exploration in the construction of first-class courses, talent training methods, the compilation of series textbooks, teaching model innovation, curriculum ideological and political integration, and the improvement of education results, making new contributions to further training compound foreign language talents and implementing the fundamental task of cultivating virtuous talents.
