Dean Liu Qin Participated in the 10th International Conference on English Language Teaching in China

From October 13 to 15, 2023, “the 10th International Conference on English Language Teaching in China” was held in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. The conference was hosted by China English Language Education Association (CELEA), sponsored by Sichuan University, and co-organized by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the Teaching Steering Committee of Foreign Language and Literature Majors in Sichuan General Undergraduate Colleges and Universities, the College Foreign Language Committee of Sichuan Higher Education Association, and the Provincial Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Foreign Language Training (Sichuan University).More than 300 experts, scholars and educational practitioners in the field of English education at home and abroad gathered in Chengdu to conduct in-depth discussions and exchanges around the theme of the conference “Promoting Digital Transformation and Innovating English Education.” More than 15,000 people watched the main conference online.Led by Dean Liu Qin, the academic English teaching team of Zhang Le, Chen Zheng, Zuo Xiuyuan, Bi Zhiwei, Miao Peng, Ma Yuan and 14 graduate students from our college participated in the conference.

The opening ceremony of the conference was presided over by Professor Wang Xin, Dean of the College of Foreign Language of Sichuan University. Professor Sun Youzhong, Chairman of the China English Language Education Association and Chinese and Vice President of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor You Jinsong, Vice President of Sichuan University, and Chang Xiaoling, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, delivered speeches respectively.Keynote speeches were delivered by Kyria Rebeca Finardi, Vice-President of International Society of Applied Linguistics and Ph.D from Federal University of Saint Espírito, Professor Xu Xiaofei of Harbin Institute of Technology, Professor Sun Youzhong of Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Hayo Reinders of Anaheim University, Director of Huawei Translation Center Jiang Yanfei, and Professor Wang Xin of Sichuan University.

Focusing on the theme of the conference, participating experts and front-line teachers conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions on educational concepts and models, teaching process and evaluation methods, teaching research, teaching material construction, teacher development, professional construction, personnel training and other aspects through forums, special seminars, group speeches and posters displays.The academic English teaching team of our college made a special speech entitled “Exploring the Path of Academic English Teaching Reform in Polytechnic Universities -Taking University of Shanghai for Science and Technology as an Example.” Taking University of Shanghai for Science and Technology as an example, the team introduced the cultivation of students’ academic English literacy and academic English use ability from the dimensions of curriculum setting, textbook compilation, platform construction and extracurricular practice. It expounded the construction and implementation path of curriculum ideology and politics, interpreted the excavation and integration of ideological and political elements in the course of Academic English Reading and Writing, presented the digital resource library construction and online and offline hybrid teaching ideas of the course of Academic English Listening and Speaking, and relied on the resources of polytechnic universities to construct an integrated evaluation scheme of academic English reading and writing, so as to enhance the academic nature of academic English writing test and promote the achievement of test purposes. During the question and answer session, the team members had in-depth discussions with peer experts.

Professor Liu Qin of our college supervised 2022 linguistics postgraduates Chen Yuxi, Sun Yueyue and Liu Sheng to give research reports on “Correlation Analysis of Second Language Writing Anxiety and Written Corrective Feedback Attitude - Based on a Junior High School in Jiangsu Province,” “Investigation of College Students’ Offline Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety after the Epidemic—Taking College English Course of a University in Shanghai as an Example” and “Empirical Research on Data-driven Cross—cultural Writing Teaching,” presenting the research status of students in our college in three aspects: written corrective feedback, offline teaching classroom and digital transformation of education.Associate Professor Bi Zhiwei supervised 2021 master’s students in linguistics, Yue Wang and Lv Yumiao, to conducted research reports entitled “The Effects of Writing Self-efficacy and Strategy Use on EFL Students’ Summary Writing Performance” and “Exploring the Relationship Between EFL Learners’ Self-efficacy and Anxiety in IELTS Listening Test Performance”, presenting the current research status of the correlation between cognitive and affective factors and the academic English writing and listening performance of second language learners.The students’ research reports were recognized by experts and scholars, and at the same time, they also had a heated discussion with the teachers and students present on the advantages and disadvantages of the research design, which collided with academic sparks and benefited the students a lot.

By participating in the International Conference on English Language Teaching in China, the academic English teaching team of our college has expanded its brand influence, and will more firmly face the opportunities and challenges of digital education. Based on the foundation of the discipline, we will adhere to the original intention of educating people, sharpen the technical sword, open up educational innovation, and make further efforts to promote the reform of college English teaching and academic research in our college, and promote the further construction and development of first-class courses, first-class textbooks and first-class teams.
