From July 3 to July 4, the ' Summer Camp for Outstanding College Students' of was successfully held, and a total of 95 outstanding college students were eligible for SCOCS. The camp was officially opened at 8:30 a.m. on July 3. Present at the opening ceremony were dean Liu Qin, deputy dean Han Geling, Professor Wang Yong, professor Zhu Lixia, professor Wang Ena, Associate Professor Yang Benming, associate professor Jiang Cheng, Dr.Ye Feng, Dr. Han Yang and Dr. Zhang Yan. CFL arranged a series of events for the participants, such the opening ceremony, M.A program presentation, seminars, fellowship application, curriculum arrangement and carrer prospective. The activities are designed to enhance the students' understanding of the development of disciplines and stimulate their interest in foreign language learning and research.
A unique opening ceremony
Dean Liu Qin first welcomed the talented students from all over the country, and She made a discipline introduction titled - 'Foreign language opens a wonderful life'. Taking outstanding alumni as examples, she pointed out that learning a foreign language could broaden one’s horizon, cultivate his thinking ability, improve communication efficiency, and shape leading capabilities. The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology (USSt) features a strong academic background in all disciplines, and a beautiful campus, perfect for study and life. CFL boasts remarkable advantages in teacher resource, academic research, hardware equipment, student training and international exchanges. Dean Liu quotedMei Perry (a professor in Shanghai College, the antecedent to USST) as saying, 'Every ship bound for Shanghai must pass within the sight of this university; In such a campus, no student with a critical mind will fail to feel that they are living in a big world '. Dean Liu told the participants that she was look forward to meeting them on campus next year.
Deputy Dean Han Geling, the host of the opening ceremony, introduced the 2024 M.A program in detail. CFL attaches great importance to cultivating the academic ability of our students. Every year, it holds various academic lectures, academic forums and 'Hujiang Cup' Science and Technology translation Competition. It also encourages and sponsors students to participate in academic conferences and translation competitions. with these measures, it aims to improve our students’ academic and translation abilities. Professor Wang Yong, Associate Professor Yang Benming, Professor Wang Ena and Professor Zhu Lixia gave a detailed introduction to the English, Japanese and German M.A programs. their detailed introductions help the students to have a better understanding of programs that CFL would offer.
2. Informative and enlightening Seminars and Lectures
After the opening ceremony, seven informative and entertaining seminars and lectures were held. Dr. Ye Feng gave a lecture titled 'Interpreting Regional and Country Studies. His lecture enlightened the students on how to Understand the Diversity and Complexity of the World, how to explore the concept and value of country and how to effectively apply methods and techniques to solve regional and country problems. Associate Professor Jiang Cheng gave a lecture on the topic of 'Why Translators Should Learn Translation Technology'. During the lecture, professor Jiang’s lecture cover such themes as the technical challenges in translation, translation classification, translation process, practical application of translation technology and translation technology research.Associate Professor Yang Benming gave a lecture on 'Translation from the World to China--- Practice and Exploration of Japanese M.A program CFL'. Professor Yan pointed out that in order to be a qualified translator, one should go through systematic training. He shared his experience in guiding graduate students in Japanese-Chinese translation, explaining that the curriculum of M.A program covers both translation and interpretation skills. With the title 'The Translator's Subjectivity in German-Chinese Translation', Dr. Zhang Yan analyzed the translator's subjectivity in translation from the perspectives of the development of translation studies, translation process and translation strategy selection. She clarified the profound theories in simple language . Dr. Han Yang gave a lecture titled 'Corpus-based Translation Practice and Research'. Starting with 'What can corpus do for translation as a tool', she introduced the characteristics of corpus translation, and its basic concepts and classification of corpus, the application of corpus software and the application of corpus in translation.
On the morning of July 4th, Dr. Bi Zhiwei delivered a lecture on pragmatics--- 'Second Language Pragmatics in an EAP Context'. He walked the students through the interest and charm of pragmatics. The lecture took 'request' in Chinese and English as the starting point, and vividly demonstrated to the students the theoretical connotation and practical significance of pragmatics through various forms such as situational interpretation, questioning and interaction.
Associate Professor Wang Yingjun, citing the classic 'trolley problem', gave a lecture titled 'Ethical Dilemmas in Science Fiction Literature'. The lecture took 'Klara and the Sun', 'Frankenstein' and 'The Three-Body Problem' and other science fiction masterpieces as the main line to explain the ethical issues in the world of science fiction literature. In the lecture, a series of questions such as 'High Technology with human science development' and 'Civilization under the Law of the Dark Forest' were raised, which were fascinating and thought-provoking.
3.Introduction of scholarships and Career Prospectives
Mr. Liang Zuojia, graduate student counselor at CFL briefed the students on the rules and regulations of various scholarship and awards which the students have acess to. Based on the statistics over the past years, he also presented to the students a sketchy picture about their potential empolyment prospective and remunerations
4. Experience sharing and exchange with current graduate students
Liu Yan, Executive Chairman of the Graduate Student Union (GSU)of CFL, together with Gu Wenhao and Zheng Yiru, two members of GSU presidium, shared their campus life with the summer camp participants, and answer their questions.
On the last day of the summer camp, an exam is given to the participants, and after the results of the exam were reviewed and double-checked, the result list was published on the official CFL website. On the afternoon of July 4th, with the support of the Graduate School and the careful planning and preparations by CFL, the informative and entertaining summer camp came to a successful end.
