In order to further consolidate and strengthen the collaboration with tour U.S partner of our joint program, and to enhance the quality of our joint programs, Qu Deqiang, the Secretary of College Party Committee, led a group of six to Queens College, City University of New York (CUNY) for a two-weeks research and study session from July 10 to July 27. Jia Xiaoyun, Deputy Director of English (Sino-US joint program) department; Qi Xiaowen; Wu Juyan, Deputy Director of English Department, and relevant staff of the office were among the visiting members. This is the first delegation sent overseas by the CFL since the pandemic.
Duriing their short stay at Queens College, six faculty members actively engaged in research and learning. They also attended relevant courses to enhance their professional knowledge, conducted on-site investigations into the management of American universities to broaden and enrich their perspectives. With the professors from the English department of Queens College, they had in-depth discussions on teaching and management methods, which may provide valuable reference and inspiration for our college in the future.

In addition to classroom learning, the visitor professors also met with the students who participated in our college’s 2+2 Double Degree Joint Program with Queens College. They learned that students are going well in their studies and life at Queens College, and have made detailed plans to complete all required courses. Qu Deqiang reminded the students the importance of making a balance between work and life, between taking care of themselves in diet and other aspects and doing research. the visiting professors also had a detailed discussion with the students and provided guidance on graduation thesis, oral defense and other relevant issues.

During their stay, the faculty members were invited to meet with their hosts such as Frank Wu, President of Queens College; Jay Hershenson, Vice President; Simone Yearwood, Acting Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities; Kate Pechenkina, Dean of the College of Social Science; Patrick O’Connell, Executive Director of the International Exchange Office, and Tao Wang, Program Leader of the joint program. Frank Wu extended warm welcome and high appreciation for their visit, and express his hope to further strengthen cooperation with USST in the future so as to add new vigor to the educational cooperation between both sides. The visiting faculty member expressed their appreciation for the invitation to Queens College and stated that this exchange was a benefit for their future career at USST. They would devote themselves to the cultivation of high-quality and comprehensive foreign language talents with an international perspective. Besides, both sides discussed the future development of the program and the potential for educational cooperation in detail, and expressed the hope for a better communication and cooperation.

The research and learning session shows the spirit of innovation and enterprising of CFL faculty. It will further promote the quality development of our joint program by learning the experience and pedagogical approach from out U.S counterpart. It is expected that more teachers will go abroad to learn and doing research, thus contributing to the development of the college’s international education in the future.

The undergraduate program in English displine, jointly organized by USST and Queens College, CUNY, is a Sino-Foreign four-year English major undergraduate program established in 1996 with the approval of the Education Department of the former Ministry of Machinery Industry, and has been running for 27 years. Since 2013, CFL has annually selected and sent 2-6 teachers to Queens College for one-semester exchange or summer session. Up to now, a total of 60 teachers have been to Queens College, and most of them are the key faculty members in the college now.
