At 8:30 a.m. on September 4，the opening ceremony for 2023 graduate students of the College of Foreign Languages (CFL) was held in the lecture hall of the Foreign Language Building. Present at the ceremony are Qu Deqiang, Secretary of the College Party Committee; Dean Liu Qin; Deputy Dean Han Geling; Jin Xiaodong, Deputy Secretary of the College Party Committee; Duputy Dean, Zhang Le, and all graduate supervisors. The ceremony was presided over by Vice Dean Han Geling.
Vice Dean Han Geling delivers opening speech
Firstly, Dean Liu Qin presented to the newly enrolled graduate students, the history, disciplinary structure, faculty resources, facilities, student numbers, employment situation, academic activities and student training programs of the CFL. Dean Liu Qin also provided a detailed explanation of the curriculum for the Foreign Languages and Literatures Major. She emphasized that incoming graduate students should figure out their future goals as soon as possible, make a study plan, and reach their goals step by step and finish their studies as scheduled. She also encouraged the new students to take former Chinese Ambassador to U.S, Li Daoyu, an outstanding alumnus of CFL, as an example, embracing the challenges of the times, learn foreign languages well, broaden their international perspectives, and be better narrators of China’s stories
Dean Liu Qin Presents an College Overview and an Introduction to Foreign Language and Literature Program
Professor Wang Yong, Director of MTI Education Center, made a speech. He briefed the students on the curriullum objectives, research direction and academic capabilites, international cooperation programs and awards received by MTI students. He pointed out that MTI students should have a comprehensive development in morality, intelligence and physique, and try to be professional translators with practical and innovative capabilities. The incoming students should adopt a modern mindset, better themselves in all aspects, adapt to the objective needs of modernization development, and be active.

The Dupty Dean of CFL Han Geling provided a detailed introduction for the graduate education, including the graduate degree programs, the relationship between learning and degree requirements, research and awards. She also presented information on the enrollment, curriculum design, degree standards, basic requirements for winning a degree , and the research and award achievements in graduate education at the CFL. After Dean Han’s introduction, the students gained a deeper understanding of the academic mission and responsibility during their graduate studies, laying a solid foundation for them to start academic exploration.

After a five-minute break, deputy Dean Han Geling chaired the meeting for the supervisors and their newly-enrolled graduate students. Each graduate superviosr walked onto the stage to introduce himself/herself and his or her research directions.

Close cooperation with one’s supervisor is vital for graduate study, and also a cornerstone for future academic and research career. A detailed introduction by the supervisor afford the new students a better understanding of their supervisors’ academic backgrounds and expertise, thus, enabling them to make informed choices regarding their own research interests. The introduction also cements a stronger supervisor-student relationship, a boost to both academic and personal growth.
The opening ceremony for the 2023 graduate students of CFL was a great success. It is believed that the new students will move forward with their academic research. The young people with great vitality should embrace a bright future if they stick to their goals and squander no time . let us spare no sweats and efforts and live up to the golden years in life, and never cease to create the brilliance that belongs to the young generation.
